Geography
At our school, we aim to develop pupils’ understanding of the world, its environments, and the people who live within it. Our geography curriculum is structured using the Haringey Education Partnership Opening Worlds programme, providing a coherent, knowledge-rich framework that supports progression across Key Stage 2.
The Opening Worlds curriculum enables pupils to build a secure body of substantive knowledge about both physical and human geography. Pupils explore a range of places, environments, and geographical processes, developing an understanding of how the world is shaped and how people interact with it. Learning is carefully sequenced to ensure that knowledge is built cumulatively and revisited over time.
A strong emphasis is placed on developing geographical vocabulary, which is explicitly taught and reinforced to support pupils in describing and explaining geographical concepts with accuracy. Through this, pupils are able to make connections between different locations and themes, deepening their overall understanding of the subject.
Disciplinary knowledge is central to our geography teaching. Pupils are encouraged to think like geographers by asking questions, interpreting a range of sources such as maps, photographs, and data, and drawing informed conclusions. They develop an understanding of key concepts including place, space, scale, and interdependence, enabling them to analyse the relationships between people and their environments.
Fieldwork and enquiry-based learning provide opportunities for pupils to apply their knowledge in real-world contexts. These experiences help to develop observation, data collection, and analytical skills, while fostering a deeper connection to the local and wider environment.
By nurturing curiosity about the world and an understanding of global issues, we aim to equip pupils with the knowledge and skills they need to become informed, responsible citizens.
